CNR-ISMN
The Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials is one of the 88 institutes of the National Research Council, Italy’s largest multidisciplinary research organization, whose activities are divided into scientific and technological research macro-areas. Departments are the organizational units of the macro areas, and the Department of Chemical Sciences and Materials Technology is the one to which the ISMN belongs. Established on September 13, 2000, and operational since 2002, the ISMN has achieved important scientific achievements and established significant interaction with the National and International Research System and the industrial world. ISMN boasts the collaboration of about 70 researchers, and to achieve its goals it integrates enabling technologies with a transversal focus that includes advanced materials, photonics, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and advanced chemical and manufacturing processes. These technologies are part of ISMN’s existing assets, which are available through its advanced research infrastructure and state-of-the-art scientific and technological instrumentation. ISMN’s activities also include the development of innovative and sustainable materials and technologies for the effective and long-term preservation of cultural heritage. The research activities of CNR-ISMN will benefit from the instrumentation of the DINAMICO Laboratory “Laboratory of DIagnostics at NAno and MIcroscale for the knowledge and the COnservation of advanced materials and cultural heritage”, which is part of the ERIHS.it Lazio Infrastructure (POR FESR 2014-2020 Lazio-Asse I, Ricerca e innovazione) and from the established expertise in the study and conservation of metallic materials.
Sapienza – Department of Chemical Engineering Materials Environment
The Department of Chemical Engineering Materials Environment (DICMA) acquired its current name in 2006.
Its history began with the establishment of the Cabinet of Docimastic Chemistry, dedicated to the teaching of organic and inorganic chemistry (1873) and of chemistry applied to building materials (1876). This organization evolved over the years following developments in industrial chemistry and eventually found its modern structure in the establishment of the Institute of Applied and Industrial Chemistry in 1932. Over the years, the original responsibilities inherent to the chemical industry expanded to include all areas of Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Metallurgy. In 1983, this Institute was reorganized together with the Institute of Mining Arts into the Department of Chemical Engineering, Raw Materials Materials and Metallurgy, a name it retained until 2006.
Since 1895, the Institute and then the Department have had their headquarters in the adjacent classical-style building on Via delle Sette Sale in the San Pietro in Vincoli building complex.
DICMA combines professors and researchers who provide educational activities, research and technological innovation in the fields of process, materials, environmental and safety engineering, and conducts training of chemical, environmental and safety engineering students,
DICMA participates, institutionally and through its researchers, in University Research Centers (CISTEC), Research and Service Centers with teaching and research activities (CERSITES), Joint Labs (Hydro-Eco Center, Nanolab Center) and, through its researchers, in entrepreneurial spin-offs.
Lastly, the Department is engaged in European, international and national research projects. It also carries out scientific and technological consulting for private companies, industrial groups and public institutions, in areas ranging from energy, environment, materials and raw materials.
